The Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna (RSBY) may have been a grand success in many states but it seems to have fallen flat on its face in Maharashtra. The ministry of labour, the implementing ministry, is contemplating whether to continue the national health insurance scheme in its present form in the state. It will be also requesting the Centre to transfer the scheme to the health ministry.

The state labour minister Hassan Mushrif told TOI that though RSBY has been there in Maharashtra since 2008, not many have benefited from the scheme which provides a cover of Rs30,000 annually. "It is only the insurance companies which have benefited and not the economically backward class for which it is meant. Since the public health department did not participate in RSBY, there are no government hospitals empanelled in the scheme. Even 30-35% of the smart cards issued by the companies were found to be bogus," he said.
